Few banknotes have such a curious story behind them as the 50,000 Iranian rial banknote (Pick 162, 50,000 rials Iran). It was the first in the transition series to the toman, began circulation on March 6, 2021, and replaced a previous version that had caused quite a stir: the one featuring the atomic symbol. Today, the reverse features one of Iran's most beloved sites, the tomb of the poet Hafez. The specimen we are selling is from a 2022 print run.
You can find it uncirculated in its product page (P162) and also in our set of 10 Iranian banknotes.
From an atom to a poet
The first versions of this denomination showed a map of Iran with a stylized atom, an allusion to the nuclear program that became international news. The 2021 version completely changed the message: politics out, poetry in. It also debuted the trick that the entire series would later copy, with the "5" in the foreground and the four zeros printed in an almost white color.
The reverse: the Hafezieh in Shiraz
What you see is the pavilion that covers the tomb of Hafez, in a garden in Shiraz:
- Eight stone columns about ten meters tall that support a copper dome shaped like a dervish hat, a nod to the Sufism that permeates the poet's work. Inside, the dome is covered in colorful mosaics.
- Beneath the dome, in the center, you can make out the marble tombstone with engraved verses by Hafez.
- The garden background, in pink tones, reminds us that the tomb is surrounded by orange trees and flowerbeds, like a Persian garden.
- The current pavilion was designed by the Frenchman André Godard in 1935 and was built between 1938 and 1940, but the first monument had been erected by King Karim Khan Zand in 1773.
- On the left, black calligraphy, and under the drawing, the legend "HAFEZIEH - SHIRAZ" and "FIFTY THOUSAND RIALS".
Why Hafez?
Hafez of Shiraz (14th century) is the master of the ghazal, the Persian lyric poem. His Divan is in almost every Iranian home, and there is a custom that remains alive: the fal-e Hafez, opening the book at random to "consult" the poet about the future. At the Hafezieh, it is common to see people reading verses aloud.
The obverse
- Khomeini in violet tones, on the left.
- A blue "5" in the upper left corner and another large one at the bottom, with Persian numerals.
- The value in letters ("fifty thousand rials") at the top right and the name of the bank in calligraphy.
- Diagonal bands in violet, pink, and lilac: violet is the color of this denomination in the series.
