South Korean Banknotes

South Korea prints some of the most technically advanced banknotes in the world, dedicating them to 16th-century Confucian scholars. The current series features Yi Hwang, Yi I, and his mother Shin Saimdang, the first woman on a Korean banknote and the only mother and son to share a series.

Hangul as design

The Korean alphabet was created in the 15th century in a deliberate and rational manner, and its geometry works very well typographically. The banknotes take advantage of this with a clean composition that contrasts with the density of other Asian banknote series.

Holograms, optically variable inks, microprinting, and tactile elements. South Korea competes with Switzerland and Japan in technical sophistication, and it is a good country to learn how to recognize modern security features.
