Bulgarian banknotes

The Bulgarian lev has its days numbered. Bulgaria has been in the waiting room for the euro for years, and once it completes the adoption, its currency will become a legacy, just as happened to the Croatian kuna in 2023. Buying now means buying before the end.

Who appears on the leva

Ivan Vazov, the national writer; Zahari Zograf, icon painter; Pencho Slaveikov; and Stefan Stambolov. The reverses feature Orthodox monasteries, Cyrillic manuscripts, and the National Theatre of Sofia.

The cradle of Cyrillic

The Cyrillic alphabet was created in Bulgaria in the 9th century and from there it spread to Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine. Bulgarian banknotes celebrate this explicitly, with manuscripts and ancient letters integrated into the design.
