Banknotes of Iran

Iran has a particularity that almost no other country shares: its banknotes from before 1979 bear the portrait of the Shah, and after the revolution, many of those examples circulated with the face crossed out or overprinted to erase it.

Overprinted banknotes

Before having its own issues, the Islamic Republic reused the paper from the previous regime by canceling the portrait with a stamp. They are literal historical pieces: you can see the regime change printed over the banknote.

The rial and inflation

Modern issues reach high denominations and are some of the cheapest on the market, with Persian calligraphy, Islamic architecture, and portraits of Khomeini. The numbering uses Eastern Arabic numerals, which are worth learning.
