Israel prints some of the most security-advanced banknotes in the world, and dedicates them to something unusual: poets. The current series features Rachel Bluwstein, Shaul Tchernichovsky, Leah Goldberg, and Natan Alterman, with their verses microprinted right on the banknotes.

The microprinting of poem fragments is not just a technical embellishment: it is the content. With a magnifying glass, you can read entire verses. Few numismatic collections have turned a security feature into such a deliberate cultural decision.

From the lira to the shekel

Israel changed its currency twice: the lira gave way to the shekel in 1980, and the latter to the new shekel in 1985, following hyperinflation that forced the removal of three zeros. Issues of the lira and the first shekel are inexpensive and tell the story of that period.
