Chinese Banknotes

China printed the first paper money in history. In the 11th century, under the Song dynasty, deposit certificates that functioned as banknotes were already in circulation, seven hundred years before Europe did the same.

The current renminbi

The fifth series features Mao's portrait on all denominations and, on the reverses, iconic landscapes: the Great Hall of the People, West Lake in Hangzhou, the mountains of Guilin, and the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The 100-yuan note is one of the most printed in the world.

A necessary disclaimer

A great deal of Chinese paper circulates that is not currency: "hell money" that is burned in funeral rites, with denominations in the millions and the portrait of the Jade Emperor. They are beautiful, but they are not numismatic items. Here, there are only real issues from the People's Bank of China.
