Jersey Notes

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel, closer to France than to England, with one hundred thousand inhabitants and its own pound at par with the sterling. And it has a historical chapter that no other British territory shares.

The German occupation

The Channel Islands were the only British territory occupied by Germany in the Second World War, from 1940 to 1945. During that time, Jersey issued its own emergency paper money, designed by local artist Edmund Blampied, who hid a small act of resistance on the sixpence note: the letters forming "BRITISH" in the reverse design.

Modern issues of the States of Jersey feature the royal effigy, Mont Orgueil Castle, and island landscapes. Short print runs, as befits one hundred thousand inhabitants.
