Collection: Ugandan Banknotes

Uganda began issuing its own shillings in 1966, four years after independence, when it broke away from the common currency of British East Africa. Since then, its paper money has recorded the country's political history, issue by issue.

From Idi Amin to the current series

Banknotes from the seventies bear the portrait of Idi Amin and are among the few everyday documents remaining from that period. Then came the reconstruction issues, and in 2010, a new series without portraits, dedicated to Ugandan fauna, landscapes, and crafts.

The zeros of the crisis

The inflation of the eighties forced the issuance of increasingly higher denominations until the 1987 redenomination, which removed two zeros. Banknotes prior to that reform are inexpensive and tell the story of what happened well.
