Oman Banknotes

The Omani rial is one of the most valuable currencies in the world: it is worth more than the British pound and significantly more than the euro. This means that low-denomination banknotes—100 and 200 baisa—are small change, while the high-denomination ones have a respectable face value.

What is printed on them

Mud-brick forts like Nizwa and Bahla, dhows with lateen sails, the Grand Canyon of Arabia at Jebel Shams, and the portrait of Sultan Qaboos, who ruled for half a century and whose image defines almost all 20th-century Omani banknote collecting.

Script worth looking at

The Arabic calligraphy on Gulf banknotes is not decoration: it is composition. In Oman, furthermore, Eastern and Western Arabic numerals coexist on the same banknote, which helps to read them without knowing Arabic.
