Collection: Banknotes of Abkhazia
Abkhazia is a territory in the Caucasus that declared independence from Georgia in 1992 and is recognized today by only five states in the world. Even so, it issues its own currency, the apsar, and therein lies all its interest for a collector.
Money from a country almost no one recognizes
Apsars are not legal tender anywhere except within Abkhazia, and they do not even truly circulate there: the Russian ruble does the daily work. They are issued in tiny print runs, mainly commemorative, which makes them collector's items from day one.
A category of its own
Notaphily of unrecognized states is a niche with loyal followers: Abkhazia, Transnistria, Somalilandia, South Ossetia. These are pieces that pose an interesting question: what does it take for a piece of paper to be money.
