Ukraine Banknotes

The word "hryvnia" comes from Kievan Rus', where it referred to a neck ornament and later to a unit of weight and currency. Prince Volodymyr the Great minted coins featuring the trident, a symbol that remains on the current Ukrainian coat of arms.

From the karbovanets to the hryvnia

Following its independence in 1991, Ukraine used the karbovanets, which was devoured by hyperinflation. In 1996, with Viktor Yushchenko leading the central bank, a monetary reform introduced the modern hryvnia, exchanged one hundred thousand karbovantsiv for a single hryvnia, and put an end to the crisis.

Shevchenko on the banknote

The national poet Taras Shevchenko features on the 100-hryvnia banknote, one of the most well-known in the current series from the National Bank of Ukraine.
