Banknotes of the Central African States

Six countries share the same banknote: Cameroon, Gabon, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and the Central African Republic. The BEAC issues an identical CFA franc for all of them, and only a printed letter distinguishes which country each specimen corresponds to.

The letter that changes everything

That issuer code turns a seemingly simple series into a collecting challenge: the same design, the same year, and the same denomination exist in six versions, and some letters are much rarer than others because the corresponding country received smaller print runs.

A detail with a Spanish connection

Equatorial Guinea, the only Spanish-speaking African country, joined the CFA franc in 1985 after abandoning the ekuele. Its BEAC banknotes carry their own letter, and they are the most affordable way to own Equatoguinean paper money.
