Collection: Banknotes of Algeria
Algeria has one of the most graphically powerful banknote collections in the Maghreb. Its dinars combine monumental Arabic calligraphy with highly saturated illustrations: Berber fortresses, Tassili rock paintings, falcons, and palm groves.
The French colonial period
Before 1962, the Banque de l'Algérie issued currency under French administration, with Algerian franc banknotes that are highly prized historical pieces today. The change to the dinar marked the end of that era.
The Tassili paintings
Some issues feature the rock art of Tassili n'Ajjer, which dates back ten thousand years. It is one of the few countries that puts prehistory on its paper money, resulting in banknotes unlike anything else.
