Djibouti is a country of one million inhabitants in the Horn of Africa, at the mouth of the Red Sea. Its franc has been pegged to the dollar since 1949, which has kept it exceptionally stable in a region where almost nothing else is.
Crossroads of three worlds
The banknotes reflect this position: texts in French and Arabic, Afar and Issa motifs, Red Sea dhows and Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa. It is a hybrid notaphily that resembles neither the Maghreb nor sub-Saharan styles.
Why it is rarely seen
Because the print runs are small and the country lies outside the usual collecting routes. When it does appear, it is usually in lots from wholesalers specializing in the Horn of Africa.
What you will find here
