Polo is not an English invention. It was played in Persia more than two thousand years ago, and the 2,000,000 rial Iran Cheque (Pick 167, 2,000,000 rials Iran) commemorates this with one of the most beautiful reverses in recent numismatics: two riders at a gallop with their mallets. On the obverse is the square where the Safavid kings used to watch the matches. BanknoteNews confirmed it in March 2025, and it is equivalent to 200 tomans.

You can find it uncirculated in its product page (P167), and it is also included in our set of 10 Iran banknotes.

The reverse: a chogan match

  • Two riders cross paths mid-race, leaning over their horses with their mallets raised. One appears to be striking the ball while the other approaches to contest it.
  • The design features fine, undulating lines, with manes and tails in motion, in the style of classic Persian miniatures. There is no landscape: only movement.
  • A yellow light background behind the riders and green tones throughout the rest.
  • At the bottom left, a small caption in Farsi identifying the scene; at the top, "IRAN CHEQUE," "2000000," and "TWO MILLION RIALS."
  • To the right, the red "200" for the tomans.

Chogan was played on horseback with a wooden mallet, and UNESCO included it in its 2017 list of intangible cultural heritage. It was the sport of kings and soldiers, and also served as training for the cavalry.

The obverse: Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan

  • On the left, the portal of the Imam Mosque, with its grand entrance arch and two twin minarets.
  • On the right, the dome of the mosque, covered in tiles, with more minarets beside it.
  • The two-story arched galleries that surround the square, in the foreground.
  • The value "2000000" in green, the name of the bank, "ایران چک" in red, and the "200" in relief on the left.

Shah Abbas I made Isfahan his capital in 1598 and ordered the creation of this square, measuring approximately 560 × 160 meters, one of the largest in the world. Polo was played there: the stone goalposts are still preserved at the ends. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1979.
