Botswana Banknotes

Botswana named its currency pula, which in Setswana means "rain," and its subdivision thebe, "shield." In a country two-thirds covered by the Kalahari, calling money "rain" is not poetic: it is literal. Rain was wealth.

Kalahari wildlife

Elephants, zebras, lions, and the tigerfish appear on the various denominations, along with the Gaborone Dam and scenes of diamond mining, which is what turned Botswana into one of the most prosperous countries in Africa.

The first issues

Botswana began issuing pula in 1976, ten years after independence; until then, it used the South African rand. The series from the seventies and eighties are the hardest to find in high grades.
