Nepal Banknotes

Nepal is the only country in the world whose flag is not rectangular, and its banknote collecting scene has the same personality: banknotes with Everest, one-horned rhinoceroses, yaks, Kathmandu temples, and Devanagari script that fills the design.

From kingdom to republic

Until 2008, Nepal was a monarchy, and its banknotes bore the king's portrait. When the republic was proclaimed, the Central Bank replaced the monarch with Everest. It is one of the few cases where a mountain literally replaces a king on paper money.

Entry price

Nepalese rupees are among the cheapest and most colorful banknotes in existence: for the price of a coffee, you can get an uncirculated specimen featuring Himalayan wildlife. It is one of the best countries to start with.
