Banknotes from Germany

Germany has the most well-known episode of hyperinflation in European history, which left behind one of the most curious phenomena in notaphily: Notgeld, the emergency money issued by cities, companies, and even parishes when the mark ceased to function.

1923

In November of that year, one dollar was worth 4.2 trillion marks. The Reichsbank was printing hundred-trillion-mark notes and could not keep up, so thousands of municipalities issued their own paper money. This Notgeld, often featuring artistic and humorous designs, is an inexhaustible collection in itself.

The two Germanys

The mark of the Federal Republic, featuring Clara Schumann and the Brothers Grimm, coexisted for forty years with the mark of the GDR. Reunification in 1990 and the euro in 2002 brought both stories to a close.
