Banknotes from Portugal

The Portuguese escudo was born in 1911, following the republican revolution that overthrew the monarchy, replacing the real at a rate of one thousand reais per escudo. Its symbol, the cifrão, resembles the dollar sign but with two vertical bars.

The navigators of the final series

Between 1995 and 1997, the Bank of Portugal issued its final series, dedicated to the great figures of the discoveries: Portuguese navigators and explorers illustrate the 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 escudo banknotes, with maritime motifs and Manueline architecture on the reverses.

The end of the escudo

The escudo ceased to be legal tender on December 31, 1999, although old banknotes could be exchanged at the Bank of Portugal until 2022.
