Costa Rican Banknotes

The Central Bank of Costa Rica's biodiversity series won the award for the most beautiful banknote in the world, and with good reason: each denomination represents a different ecosystem in the country, with its flora and fauna, in a color gradient that ranges from the blue of the sea to the green of the cloud forest.

One banknote per ecosystem

The three-toed sloth in the tropical rainforest. The blue morpho butterfly in the cloud forest. The white-tip shark and Cocos Island. The deer and the dry forest. Placed in order, the entire series functions as a natural map of Costa Rica, which is why many people collect the complete set even if they don't collect anything else.

The classic: the Banco Anglo Costarricense

Before the central bank, there were private banks issuing their own paper money. The colones from the Banco Anglo Costarricense from the early 20th century, with their lithographic engravings and their allegory of Mercury, are pieces from another era and another level of rarity.
