The 2022 Iranian 10,000 rial banknote (Pick 160, 10000 rials Iran) is small in value but great in significance: it is the lowest rung of the series with which Iran is preparing to replace the rial with the new toman, and its design already announces this with a huge "1". It entered circulation on July 13, 2022.
You can find it in uncirculated condition on its product page (P160), and also as part of our set of 10 Iranian banknotes.
A banknote read in two currencies
Look at the corners: the value appears as "10000", but the four zeros are printed in a much lighter shade than the "1". This is not a decorative touch. It is the way the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran found to accustom people to the future unit, in which 1 new toman will be equivalent to 10,000 rials. The law eliminating those four zeros was approved by the Guardian Council in November 2025, with a three-year transition period.
The obverse
- Portrait of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in intaglio engraving, offset to the left; it can be felt in relief when you run your finger over it.
- Name of the bank in Farsi ("Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran") in calligraphy, top right, and the value written in words: "ten thousand rials."
- The signatures of the Governor of the Central Bank and the Minister of Economy, below the text.
- A giant "1" at the bottom right, framed by red bands: the value in tomans is what the eye sees first.
- Two serial numbers in Persian numerals, in opposite corners.
- Grayish-green tones with red accents, the identifying color for this value in the series.
The reverse, from top to bottom
The reverse is the "international" side: texts in English ("CENTRAL BANK OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN", with "IRAN" in red) and the figure "10000" with the zeros lightened. But the main feature is the Mausoleum of Avicenna in Hamadan:
- The tower. What looks like an obelisk is actually a 28-meter needle with twelve concrete pillars that meet at the top. Architect Houshang Seyhoun was inspired by the Gonbad-e Qabus tower, an 11th-century brick funerary tower in northern Iran. It is a way of bridging medieval Persian funerary architecture with the modern language of the 1950s.
- The horizontal body. Below the tower, you can see an elongated building with a gallery of pillars: there you will find the tomb, a library containing works by Avicenna, and a small archaeological museum (first millennium BC bronzes, coins, and Sassanid silverware).
- The date. Construction of the complex began in 1949, was completed in 1953, and was inaugurated in May 1954, for Avicenna's millennium in the Islamic lunar calendar.
- The green calligraphy on the left and the vegetation in the foreground complete the scene, while the large red "1" in the left margin repeats the value in tomans.
Who was Avicenna?
Ibn Sina (c. 980-1037) was a Persian physician, philosopher, and astronomer. His Canon of Medicine was taught in European universities until the 17th century, and in Iran, the day of his birth is celebrated as Physician's Day. He died in Hamadan, which is why his mausoleum is located there.
Security and technical specifications
The banknote features a Khomeini watermark with electrotype "1", a 5 mm wide color-shifting security thread in windows with "CBI", a registration number that completes when held up to the light, microprinting, and invisible fibers that glow in four colors under ultraviolet light.
- Catalog: Pick 160 · Date: undated (issued 07-13-2022)
- Format: 156 × 71 mm · Paper: cotton with protective varnish
- Mintage and printer: not disclosed by the Central Bank
For your collection
It is the perfect piece to start collecting Iran for less than the cost of a coffee, and the foundation of a very original thematic collection: science and medicine on banknotes of the world. If you want to see what the 10,000 rials looked like just before this redesign, compare it with the 2017-2019 10,000 rial banknote, which featured the tomb of Hafez.
Remember: it is sold as a collector's item and cannot be paid for with PayPal. International shipping, original and uncirculated banknotes, and specialized assistance for any questions.
