Kazakhstani Banknotes

Kazakhstan has won the IBNS Banknote of the Year award several times, and not by chance: it was one of the first countries to print the obverse in a vertical format and to build an entire series around a single architectural element.

The tree and the Baiterek

The 2006 series onwards features the Baiterek tower in Astana and the tree of life from Turkic mythology, with a handprint on the paper. The reverses feature stylized maps and monuments, with a palette that changes by denomination without losing unity.

The 1993 tenge

Kazakhstan launched its currency two years after independence, with an initial series of portraits of historical figures printed in the United Kingdom. It is more modest than the modern ones, and is harder to find in uncirculated condition today.
