Collection: Kenyan notes
In 2019, Kenya did something that very few African countries have done: it removed the president's portrait from its banknotes and replaced it with the Kenyatta International Convention Centre and the country's wildlife. It was a constitutional decision, to avoid a cult of personality on the currency.
Before and after that reform
Previous issues feature Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi, and cover the period from independence in 1963. The new ones dedicate each denomination to a sector of the country: agriculture, livestock, tourism, sports, and the environment, with elephants, lions, and rhinoceroses on the reverses.
Before Kenya: British East Africa
Until 1966, the East African Currency Board shilling circulated, shared with Uganda, Tanganyika, and Zanzibar. Those banknotes are cataloged separately and are among the most sought-after in the region.
