Eight West African countries share a banknote: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. The BCEAO issues an identical CFA franc for all of them, with only a single letter distinguishing which one it corresponds to.
The issuer letter
A for Ivory Coast, B for Benin, C for Burkina Faso, D for Mali, H for Niger, K for Senegal, T for Togo, S for Guinea-Bissau. Collecting all eight from the same year and denomination is the classic challenge, and some letters are much harder to find than others.
Two CFA francs, not one
It is best not to confuse it with the CFA franc of the BEAC, that of Central Africa: these are two different currencies with the same name, the same value, and completely different series. It is the most common mistake when cataloging Africa.
