Gibraltar banknotes

Gibraltar has issued its own pound since 1934, at par with the sterling but with its own design and tiny print runs compared to the British ones. For a Spanish collector, it is also the foreign banknote collection closest to home.

Why they are scarce

Because the population of the Rock is around thirty-five thousand inhabitants. An issue that in the United Kingdom would amount to hundreds of millions of copies, here amounts to a few hundred thousand. This disproportion explains why they appear on the market in trickles and why high grades fetch good prices.

What they feature

The Rock seen from the sea, St. Michael's Cave, the bastions and walls, the Gibraltar Museum, and the effigy of Elizabeth II in the historical series. The old 1-pound issues with the young queen are among the most sought-after in the territory.

A detail worth knowing

The Gibraltar pound is legal tender only in Gibraltar, even if it is exchanged at par with the sterling. It is not a "variant" of the British pound: it is a distinct currency with its own issuer, and it is cataloged as such.
