Banknotes of Yemen

The Romans called Yemen Arabia Felix, or "Happy Arabia," because it was the only fertile part of the peninsula. Its banknotes continue to showcase that other Arabia: terraced agriculture, incense, and architecture that exists nowhere else.

Mud-brick skyscrapers

Shibam, the "Manhattan of the Desert," has eight-story mud buildings constructed in the 16th century. It appears on banknotes alongside the decorated houses of Sana'a, with their plaster and stained-glass windows. It is one of the most architecturally spectacular numismatic collections in the world.

Two Yemens, two issuers

Until 1990 there was North Yemen and South Yemen, each with its own currency: the rial and the dinar. And during the recent war, different issues circulated again depending on the area. That fragmentation produced variations that are collected separately.
