Collection: Banknotes of Moldova

Moldovan leu banknotes always feature the same face: that of Prince Ştefan cel Mare, who ruled the region in the 15th century. What changes is the reverse, where each denomination depicts a different fortress or monastery in the country.

One prince, seven reverses

The 20 lei note shows the Soroca fortress; the 100, the Tighina fortress; and the lower denominations, monasteries such as Căpriana or Hîrbovăț. The 1,000 lei note, the highest, bears the Presidential Palace in Chișinău. Several banknotes also feature the first verses of the popular ballad Miorița printed vertically.

From coupon to leu

After the fall of the USSR, Moldova first used a provisional coupon. The leu replaced it on November 20, 1993, at a rate of 1,000 coupons to 1 leu. The name comes from Romanian and means "lion": between 1918 and 1940, and again between 1941 and 1944, the country was part of Romania and used the Romanian leu.
