North Macedonian Banknotes

The 500 Macedonian denar banknote features a gold mask from the 6th century BC, found in the Trebeništa tombs. It is just one of the archaeological objects that appear in a series covering three thousand years of history across seven denominations.

From Trebeništa to Ohrid

The 10 denar note shows a copper coin of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I and the Church of Saint Panteleimon in Skopje; the 200, a medieval fibula and an Ottoman mosque; the 1000, the highest, a 14th-century icon of the Virgin Episkepsis in Saint Sophia of Ohrid.

A denar with a redenomination

The denar was introduced on April 26, 1992, following independence from Yugoslavia, pegged to the Yugoslav convertible dinar. A year later, in May 1993, it was redenominated: one hundred old denari became worth one new one.
