Sold exclusively as a collector's item: these are uncirculated numismatic pieces for collectors, not currency for exchange or a means of payment.
This is the only banknote in our Iran collection that dedicates its reverse to archaeology. The 5,000 rials banknote (Pick 152c, 5000 rials Iran) belongs to the series featuring the portrait of Khomeini that preceded the toman banknotes, and instead of a building, it shows two pieces of pottery from the far east of the country. The design was issued from 2013 and our specimen is from the 2013-2018 printings.
You can find it in uncirculated condition on its product page (P152c) or in our set of 4 banknotes from the previous series.
The reverse: a bowl and a plate
- On the left, a deep bowl in shades of lilac and pink, with relief geometric decoration running along the outer wall.
- On the right, a plate in silvery gray, painted with animal figures that appear to be swimming or jumping in a circle around the center.
- Behind, a background of diagonal orange and pink bands with small flowers.
- The texts in English ("FIVE THOUSAND RIALS") and the number "5000" in two corners.
According to the worldbanknotescoins catalog, the scene represents underglaze painted pottery from Zabol, a city in the Sistan and Baluchestan province, near the border with Afghanistan. Near Zabol is the Burnt City (Shahr-e Sukhteh), a Bronze Age settlement that has been a World Heritage site since 2014 and where thousands of pieces of pottery have been unearthed.
The obverse
- Khomeini on the right, in three-quarter view.
- A panel with a bouquet of flowers in maroon and gold on the left, with the value written in letters: "five thousand rials."
- The Central Bank emblem and the signatures at the bottom.
- Pink, red, and orange colors, very different from the green and blue banknotes of the series.
