Banknotes from Indonesia

Indonesia has one of the most chaotic and interesting monetary histories in Asia. During the war of independence against the Netherlands, Dutch, Japanese, and republican banknotes circulated simultaneously, and local authorities printed their own provisional issues with whatever means they had at hand.

The 1946 ORI

The Oeang Republik Indonesia was the first paper money of independent Indonesia, printed in precarious conditions and with a quality that is now part of its charm. They are as much documents of a war as they are banknotes.

Sukarno and beyond

The issues of the fifties and sixties bear the portrait of Sukarno and an iconography of workers and agriculture typical of the era. Then came the hyperinflation of the sixties, the 1965 redenomination, and the modern series featuring national heroes and traditional dances.
