Banknotes from Belarus

The first Belarusian rubles of 1992 earned an affectionate nickname: "zaichiki" (little rabbits), because the lowest denomination banknote featured a drawing of a rabbit. That was the start of a currency for a country that would go from animals to zeros in just a few years.

From rabbits to millions

That first series, featuring squirrels, beavers, and hares, quickly became inadequate: inflation forced the issuance of 20,000, 50,000, and even 5 million ruble notes in the nineties, some already featuring religious and architectural motifs.

The 2016 redenomination

On July 1, 2016, the National Bank wiped away four zeros at once: 10,000 old rubles became worth 1 new ruble. The new series, printed by De La Rue, changed course toward a more sober design focused on the country's heritage.
