Turkish Lira

In 2005, Turkey lopped six zeros off its currency in one fell swoop. A twenty-million lira banknote became a twenty. It was one of the largest redenomination events in recent European history, and it rendered an entire era of banknote collecting obsolete.

The millions

Banknotes from before 2005 go up to 20,000,000 liras and are inexpensive precisely because of their abundance. As a didactic tool, they are unbeatable: they demonstrate what inflation does without the need for any explanation.

Atatürk on all denominations

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk has appeared on the obverse of practically all Turkish banknotes since the 1930s. On the reverses, the current series features figures from Turkish culture: the architect Mimar Sinan, the mathematician Cahit Arf, and the poet Yûnus Emre.
