On September 5, 1987, the Burmese government abruptly demonetized the 25, 35, and 75 kyat banknotes, nearly 80% of the money in circulation, without paying any compensation. It was the spark that one year later ignited the popular uprising that ended 26 years of Ne Win in power.
Multiples of luck
To replace those banknotes, the government issued new 45 and 90 kyat notes: two figures divisible by nine and whose digits also add up to nine. Ne Win was superstitious about that number and trusted it would help him reach the age of 90; he died in 2002, at 92.
The Chinthe lion and General Maha Bandula
With the country renamed Myanmar in 1989, subsequent series show more conventional motifs: the chinthe, the mythological lion that guards Burmese pagodas, on the obverse; and on the reverse, General Maha Bandula, hero of the First Anglo-Burmese War, portrayed while his bronze statue is being cast.
