Banknotes of Burundi

Burundi is one of the smallest and least collected countries in Africa, and that makes it interesting: its francs almost never appear in Spanish collections, and they cost very little.

What they feature

Scenes of the Great Lakes, hippos, coffee and tea plantations—which are the country's exports—and the map of Burundi. Issues from the Banque de la République du Burundi have a Francophone graphic style that they share with Rwanda and the Congo.

A difficult history on paper

Burundi shared a currency with Rwanda until 1964, when the monetary union broke up following independence. The banknotes from that joint period, from the Banque d'Émission du Rwanda et du Burundi, are significantly scarcer than later ones.
