Albanian lek banknotes function almost like a textbook: each denomination portrays a different stage in the country's history, from the Illyrians to independence in 1912.

From an Illyrian king to Skanderbeg

The 200 lekë note features Naim Frashëri, a poet of the national renaissance; the 500 features Ismail Qemali, who proclaimed independence; the 1000 features the writer Pjetër Bogdani; the 2000 features the Illyrian king Gent; and the 5000, the highest, features Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, the nobleman who resisted the Ottomans in the 15th century.

A lek with two reforms

The currency was introduced in 1926, shortly after independence, when the country was still using various foreign currencies. In 1965, it was revalued, exchanging 10 old lekë for one new one: the version that remains in circulation today.
