Banknotes of Egypt

Few countries have as much to put on a banknote as Egypt. Its pounds combine medieval Islamic architecture on the obverse and Pharaonic iconography on the reverse: the Al-Azhar Mosque on one side, Ramses II and a solar bark on the other.

A Bilingual Notaphily

Egyptian banknotes feature Arabic on the obverse and English on the reverse, with Eastern Arabic numerals on one side and Western numerals on the other. For those who do not read Arabic, learning to identify Egyptian numerals is the first useful exercise, and it is easier than it seems.

Replacement Banknotes

Egypt marks its replacements with a distinct letter in the prefix, and the print runs are much smaller than regular ones. An Egyptian replacement may cost little and be considerably harder to find than more expensive pieces from the same series. They fit perfectly into the special serial number collection.
