Transnistrian Banknotes

Transnistria is a strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine that declared independence in 1990 and which no UN member state recognizes. It has its own government, army, flag with a hammer and sickle, and currency.

The Transnistrian ruble

The banknotes feature Suvorov, the Russian general who founded Tiraspol, and Soviet architecture. They are not convertible outside the territory and are worthless as foreign exchange, making them pure collectibles from the moment they are printed.

Plastic coins

In 2014, Transnistria issued the world's first plastic coins, with different geometric shapes for each denomination. It is one of the most talked-about numismatic oddities of the last decade.
