Tajikistan Banknotes

Tajikistan is the poorest country of the former USSR and the only one in Central Asia that is Persian-speaking rather than Turkic. Its banknote collecting reflects both: modest issues and a cultural identity distinct from that of its neighbors.

The 1994 ruble

After independence, Tajikistan continued to use the ruble and later issued its own ruble in the midst of a civil war, printed with urgency and minimal quality. Those banknotes are documents of a country that was falling apart.

The somoni

In 2000, the somoni arrived, named after Ismail Samani, founder of the 9th-century Persian Samanid dynasty. The modern series features figures from Tajik culture, the Nurek Dam—one of the highest in the world—and the Pamir Mountains.
