Banknotes of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's banknotes were designed by Robert Kalina, the same Austrian who designed the euro banknotes. It shows: the manat follows the same color logic by denomination and the same abstract architectural motifs as the European series, but with Caucasian iconography.

A currency born twice

The first manat appeared in 1919 with the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which lasted just two years before the Soviet annexation. It returned in 1992 after independence, and in 2006 it was redenominated by removing five zeros. Three different issuers for the same currency, with nearly seventy years between the first and the second.

What appears on them

The Maiden Tower in Baku, traditional musical instruments, carpet motifs, and stylized maps of the country. Kalina's series deliberately avoids portraits, which is an unusual decision in the region.
