Qatar Banknotes

The Qatari riyal features Arabic calligraphy on the obverse treated as a central design element, not as accessory text. It is one of the banknote collecting instances where the script is the illustration.

What is printed on them

Falcons used in falconry, dhows, the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Arabian oryx, and geometric motifs. The 2020 series incorporated the Al Bayt Stadium and elements of the World Cup, functioning almost like a covert commemorative issue.

Before the riyal

Until 1966, Qatar used the Gulf rupee, issued by the Reserve Bank of India for the Persian Gulf states. Those banknotes—identical to the Indian ones but with their own numbering—are highly sought-after historical rarities.
