Collection: Banknotes of Slovenia

The tolar was born just three days after Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, and it was the country's first independent currency in over half a century. Its name comes from the Central European thaler, the same origin that gave the dollar its name.

Writers and scientists, not politicians

The first banknotes, from 1992, featured figures of Slovenian thought: linguist Primož Trubar on the 10-tolar note, historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor on the 20, mathematician Jurij Vega on the 50, and impressionist painter Rihard Jakopič on the 100.

Fifteen years of life

The tolar replaced the Yugoslav dinar at par, one for one, on October 8, 1991. It circulated until December 31, 2006: Slovenia was the first country of the former Yugoslavia, and the first of the 2004 enlargement, to adopt the euro.
