Collection: Lithuanian Banknotes

The first litas banknotes, in 1992, were of such poor quality that anyone could counterfeit them with a standard printer. Many Lithuanian businesses had to buy ultraviolet lamps just to know if the banknote they were being given was real.

From the German mark to the litas, with a Soviet ruble in between

Lithuania introduced the litas in 1922, after independence, replacing the East German mark. The Soviet occupation of 1941 replaced it with the ruble, and it did not return until 1993, when it replaced the provisional talonas; it circulated until the arrival of the euro in 2015.

Aviators and national heroes

The banknotes portray figures from the country: the aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, who crossed the Atlantic in 1933 and did not survive the landing, on the 10 litų note; the poet Maironis on the 20; and Jonas Basanavičius, signatory of the declaration of independence, on the 50.
