Collection: South Vietnamese Banknotes

The Republic of Vietnam existed for only twenty years, from 1955 to 1975, but it left behind its own series of banknotes: the South Vietnamese đồng, issued by the National Bank of Vietnam and today a piece of a country that is no longer on the map.

A shared bank, a currency of its own

Until 1955, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia shared a single issuing institution from the French colonial era. That year, the newly created National Bank of Vietnam took over the sole issuance of the South Vietnamese đồng, in denominations ranging from 1 to 1,000 đồng.

The end after the fall of Saigon

Following the capture of Saigon in April 1975, the new authorities replaced the South Vietnamese đồng with the so-called "liberation đồng," at a rate of five hundred old banknotes for one new one. That transitional currency circulated until the monetary reunification of 1978.
