Ireland is the only country in the eurozone whose old currency was worth more than the euro that replaced it: one Irish pound was equivalent to 1.27 euros when the exchange rate was fixed on January 1, 1999.

The woman who appeared on every banknote

The portrait of Lady Lavery, painted by her husband Sir John Lavery, appeared as a watermark on the entire Series B (1976-1992). On the front, each banknote featured a different figure: Queen Medb on the £1 note, Jonathan Swift on the £10, and the poet W. B. Yeats on the £20.

The banknote that was never printed

In 1979, a £100 note was designed, but the project was cancelled in 1987: it is the only denomination that Ireland never issued.
