In Northern Ireland, no banknotes are legal tender, not even those from the Bank of England. Those that circulate daily are issued by commercial banks, a rarity that has survived since the 19th century.

Three banks, three designs

Bank of Ireland, Danske Bank (formerly Northern Bank), and Ulster Bank—now under NatWest—retain the historical right to print their own pound sterling. First Trust Bank, the fourth issuer, stopped doing so in 2020.

From Hibernia to nature

Bank of Ireland banknotes feature Hibernia, the female personification of Ireland, alongside the coats of arms of the Ulster counties; those of Ulster Bank, redesigned under the "Living in Nature" theme, showcase the region's flora and fauna.
