Collection: Spanish Banknotes

Some series of peseta banknotes never entered circulation: those from 1904, 1908, 1915, and 1938 remained printed in the drawers of the Bank of Spain. The peseta was in circulation from 1874 to 2001, almost one hundred and thirty years of Spanish monetary history.

From Cervantes to the Catholic Monarchs

The various series of the 20th century featured figures such as Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Goya, Juan Sebastián Elcano, and the Catholic Monarchs, as well as scenes of the Spanish conquest and exploration.

The 1992 vertical series

After more than a century of horizontal banknotes, the Bank of Spain broke the format with its last series: those from 1992, featuring Juan Carlos I and the botanist José Celestino Mutis, were printed vertically.
