Rwanda did not have its own currency until 1964, two years after gaining independence from Belgium: until then, it shared the franc with Burundi, and the first Rwandan banknotes were simply the old ones, hand-stamped with the new issuing authority.

From presidential portrait to cows

In 1974, the 500-franc banknote featured the portrait of Juvénal Habyarimana in military uniform; the 1978 series replaced it with animals and agricultural scenes, a shift that coincided with the change of the currency's name from "amafranga" to "amafaranga" in Kinyarwanda.

The central bank's gorillas

Recent issues feature mountain gorillas from Rwanda's volcanoes, the same animal that attracts tourism to the country, along with scenes of livestock and students with computers, a deliberate turn toward an image of development.
