Collection: Banknotes of Kuwait
The Kuwaiti dinar is, unit for unit, the highest-valued currency in the world linked to a country. It was introduced on April 1, 1961, when Kuwait gained independence from the United Kingdom, and is divided into 1,000 fils instead of the usual one hundred.
Banknotes stolen by the occupation
During the 1990 Iraqi invasion, the Iraqi dinar forcibly replaced the Kuwaiti dinar, and a large portion of the high-value banknotes were confiscated and ended up on the black market. After the liberation, Kuwait voided those series and issued a new one.
Banknotes for the visually impaired
The sixth series, in circulation since 2014, includes banknotes with tactile features that allow blind people to distinguish the denomination by touch, a rare innovation for paper money in the Gulf region.
