Collection: Banknotes of Austria

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, graced the 50 Austrian schilling banknote: the human mind illustrating money, in a country that took it with a sense of humor.

From the krone to the postwar period

The schilling replaced the Austro-Hungarian krone in 1925, at a rate of ten thousand kronen per schilling. It disappeared with the Nazi annexation in 1938, when it became worth 1.50 schillings for every Reichsmark, and the Allies reintroduced it in 1945.

Mozart on the highest denomination banknote

The final series portrayed Austrian scientists and artists: the biologist Karl Landsteiner, discoverer of blood groups, on the 1,000-schilling note, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the 5,000-schilling note, the highest denomination. The schilling circulated until the arrival of the euro in 2002.
