5000 colones banknote from the Central Bank of Costa Rica, dated 1999, Pick 268a, uncirculated.

Obverse: motifs of indigenous Costa Rican art, without a portrait of any historical figure. Reverse: a toucan, a jaguar, a local carving, and a pre-Columbian stone sphere among ferns, in homage to the country's archaeological heritage and fauna; the watermark repeats the figure of the toucan.

Unlike other denominations of the period, this banknote eschews portraits of national heroes and focuses on pre-Columbian culture and Costa Rican tropical nature, an approach that distinguishes it within the late 1990s colones series and appeals to collectors of banknotes with fauna and archaeological motifs.
